Alvin Lee Farmer Obituary

Local Jacksonville Beach surfing legend, Alvin L. Farmer, passed away peacefully at home Wednesday. August 20th, 2025 of natural causes. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend to many. As one of the original founders of the North Florida Eastern Surfing Association in 1973 and Wavemasters in 1984, he had a true passion for surfing and our surfing community.


Alvin was born on May 4th, 1951 in Jacksonville, FL. He graduated from Duncan U. Fletcher High School in 1970 and worked at Coggin Pontiac in the parts department. He married his high school sweetheart, Darlene Harhi, and they started a family residing in Jacksonville Beach, FL.


In the early 90s, Alvin pursued his life long dream of acting and landed several roles in film, tv, theater and commercials. Some of his notable roles were in films "Zeus & Roxanne (Floyd)"; "G.I. Jane (barber)"; and "America's Most Wanted (gas station attendant)". He was a member of SAG-AFTRA and shared his passion with our community as an acting coach.


As an individual who was proud of his Native American heritage, Alvin took the oath to become a Shaman in a local Cherokee tribe. Through four years of study and research he focused on his heritage to follow in the footsteps of his ancestors.


Alvin is preceded in death by his parents, brother (Dixie Farmer Jr) and sister (Francis Downs). He is survived by his wife Darlene Farmer, brother Joseph Farmer (Christina), sister Diane Alden, sister Tina Wilson, son Sean Farmer (Kathy May), daughter Casey Farmer, grandchildren Kendall Tobin (Zach), Nathan Barker, Joshua May (Ailinne), great grandchildren, nephews and nieces.


The family is grateful to the outpouring of love and shared memories of Alvin. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, September 20th from 2pm-5pm at Neptune Baptist Church. The Wavemasters contest will hold a paddle out at noon on Oct 4th. The family is asking for donations towards the arrangements in lieu of flowers and can be made via cashapp ($seanf1969) or venmo (@strshine97).
