Hazel Dorothy Davis (née Phillips) passed away peacefully at the age of 93 on December 25, 2025.
Hazel was born on July 4, 1932, in Lakes Pen, Jamaica, to Winston Phillips and Rosita Howitt. She attended Excelsior High School prior to immigrating to the United States where she resided in New York, Atlanta, and most recently in Jacksonville, Florida.
A devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, Hazel will be remembered for her grace, elegance, quiet strength, and wit. Most recently, she spent more than thirty happy years as a devoted grandmother and great grandmother, attending baseball and soccer games, playing Scrabble, going to the beach, reading and traveling. Her support, generosity and commitment to family was boundless. Prior to her move to Jacksonville, she spent many years as a dutiful employee of Tucker Federal Bank, exhibiting loyal and steadfast dedication to her company. In her role as Mother, Hazel instilled traditional Jamaican values into her three children and exemplified a delicate mix of modesty, tenderness and a “who don’t hear must feel” approach.
Those who knew Hazel will remember her for her soft smile, shining gold bangle stack, and her distinctive and unique streak of gray. Beyond her radiant beauty and reserved nature was an interesting mix of clever yet cutting wit and humor.
Hazel was pre-deceased by her husband of 48 years, Hildebert (Munchie) Davis, and her son, Michael Osmond (Peter) Davis. She leaves behind daughters Andrea Anderson(Michael) and Rosemarie Pixley (Mark), sister Theresa HoShue (Herries), niece Judith HoShue, nephew Capt. Paul Phillips, 7grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, brother-in-law Douglas Davis, sister-in-law Cecille Samms, many cousins, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. She was a member of Faith United Methodist Church in Jacksonville, Florida.
When diagnosed with dementia at age 87, Krystal was her caregiver and friend and helped provide excellent care and comfort to Hazel in her final days. Loving, kind, and warm-hearted, Krystal shared a special bond with her and the family would like to show appreciation and express gratitude with a special gift. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her honor can be made here: Venmo Sean-Pixley
A celebration of Hazel’s life will be shared at a later date.
