The news of learning about the passing of David Galloway Pettis hit me like a freight train. For those who had the blessing to know this man, you know David was like no other person that walked this earth. He had such a caring and empathetic side. I guess that is why he loved hospitals and helping those in need. He was always giving his last dollar to a stranger, or helping someone cross the street, or doing something for someone else, when they couldn’t do it themselves. David has always touched my heart, the depth of humanity and care and love for others was immense. He was not always understood by others, sadly to their great loss, as he was not orthodox, or rather like trying to fit a peg into a square hole. David had always given the shirt off his back to a friend or stranger, always willing to help a neighbour… His love for others of course in this world was never fully embraced by those around him, and he had such a hard time communicating his complicating feelings. Sadly over time this led to some challenging moments in his life, and many times he lost his way… I was so proud to see him pick himself off his boots time after time, trying to figure out where he could be in this complicating and often cruel world. But he always managed to do so, and it is those people who I admire the most. When David went missing in mid-December, I knew deep in my soul that I may never see nor talk with him again, at least not in this lifetime. When his sister Renee had informed me that he had passed away, it was like the floor under me collapsed. David was my friend, a confidante, and someone who I always looked forward to talking to about life. It wasn’t always easy, but every time he would do something to irk me, he would turn around and do something that would surprise me. You lived an amazing life, but through it all you never hurt anyone or did any harm to others intentionally. You will always be in my thoughts and prayers David! I know full well that you are at truly and finally at peace!
