In loving memory of Christopher Alfred Martin
7/17/1990 – 6/28/2021
Christopher tragically passed away in an accident on I95 North here in Jacksonville. He was born in Manassas, Virginia in 1990 and moved with his family to Fairfield, Vermont in 1991. In grammar school, Fairfield Center School, when the yo-yo craze hit he was a part of the action, winning championships in Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Montreal Canada, and Las Vegas Nevada. He always had a love for the outdoors and joined Boy Scouts at a young age enjoying every minute. During this time he earned the God and Country award, the 50 miler award, became an Eagle Scout and earned the honor of being a member of the Order of the Arrow, which is the Boy Scout Honor Society. Besides all the awards, he had a blast attending the Boy Scout National Jamboree in 2005 at Fort AP Hill, and was part of treks in 2007 and 2008 hiking the Rockies at 12,000 feet at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. He so loved hiking in the Rockies, and those memories and skills learned there stuck with him and later would be part of his dream for the future.
While in High School, Chris really got into and enjoyed theater, so much so, he tried out and was part of several local plays. He was in Lyric Theatre at the Flynn’s’ West Side Story in 2007, Beauty and the Beast in 2008, and Peter Pan in 2010. He was also in the Lamoille County Players production of Grease in 2008. During the prep for these productions he seemed to live at the theater. While they took up all his free time he loved every minute of being a part of these teams of talented people and of course performing. In 2008 Christopher graduated High School from Bellows Free Academy in St. Albans, VT, all while wrestling with symptoms of a disease he would be battling for the rest of his life. Those of you who knew him well, know that he had Schizophrenia. However, he was more than an individual with Schizophrenia and did his best to never let this disease stop him from pushing toward his dreams. In 2008 and 2009 he was a member of the stage crew for the multi-day Christian music festival Soulfest held in Gilford NH.
For the last several years he lived in Berlin NH. While there he attended White Mountain Community College and graduated with a Liberal Arts Associates Degree in September of 2020. This accomplishment was an over-joyous occasion given how hard he had to fight to make that day happen. An associate degree just wasn’t enough for him. He had a plan, a dream, to gain an Outdoor Recreation Bachelor’s Degree with the intent of helping others who suffered, like himself, with a mental illness, or with homelessness, or with drug addiction, to realize they are more than their circumstances. So, he put his plan to work and in January 2021 he took the leap and moved into a dorm at Plymouth State University in Plymouth NH. Sadly, the world is losing out on all that Christopher could have accomplished, to help lift others up by using the road he was given to walk.
When not focused on his education, Christopher loved to dabble in tons of artist, quirky, and creative activities. He played the guitar, continued with yo-yo and learned the diabolo(Chinese yo-yo), juggled(even with fire torches on occasion), hula-hooped, rode a
unicycle, walked on stilts, and anything else he could get his hands on. In the last few years he got into photography of nature. Each photograph seemed to capture the soul of what he was photographing in a new and real perspective. He continued to enjoy hiking, this time though, in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. He always made time for friends and family and kept us on our toes with what new thing he would be diving into next. His kind soul is so greatly missed. We as family are still working out details for a memorial service which will be held in Berlin NH, where Christopher lived for several years prior to moving to Plymouth NH in January 2021 to attend University there.
