Jerry Erdman's passing is too crazy for words. As far as his service... Seeing the procession of Jerry's Rock Buddies in their glistening, jet-black Jeeps. The honor guard carrying Jerry to his final resting place. The low flying jets screaming protests overhead. The Air Force enlisted men firing three volleys showing Jerry had been cleared and properly cared for. Taps. The flag bearer presenting Jerry's flag to Teresa. The Chaplain's words. Everything was perfect for Jerry, but those first eight minutes were heart breakers for me.

Jerry Erdman was a towering free spirit with an iron will whose enthusiastic patriotism and love of adventure took him across the globe and the U.S. From his graduation at Massapequa High School to his last workout in Jacksonville Florida, he was the Mad Max of the family. Jerry was full of unpredictable surprises and a petal to the metal hard worker, but also a loving father to his family.
I first met Jerry when we were early grade schoolers hanging out at family picnics, and even then, he was an imposing figure. He was the tall and silent type who could also whack a baseball out of Hempstead Lake State Park. He was also the oldest of the family, so early on he was the go-to-guy for his mom and siblings - something that worked for him in the Navy, Air Force and later Northwest Airlines where he was an FAA certified chief mechanic.
His absence creates a devastating implosion of loss for many - his family, friends, and both military and civilian co-workers. A harsh loss that will ride hard with us all. Jerry will be missed!
