Q: What will you never forget about Richard?
A: I knew Rick from Knoxvill Amature Hockey Association thru Phi Gamma Delta. Although we went our separate ways after college, he was always a best friend in my life.
We played hockey at the Ice Chalet in Bearden and traveled to many of the cities in the South East to play the kids in those cities. Many weekends of tomfoolery and bad decisions we learned from each other. I think Mr Unger told Rich to, “take your filthy mouth and get out of my lobby” when Rick said a choice cuss word a little too loud. Few things were funner than getting on a bus on Friday afternoon and heading to Huntsville or Atlanta to play hockey and explore another city. One weekend we rode with Rick’s dad in a white and blue Buick with plush velour interior to Atlanta where we watched an Atlanta Flames Hockey game in the brand new Omni Arena. So cool.
In Bearden Junior High School, I was a year behind Rick but we played in the band under the direction of Chet Hedgecoth. Rich worked his way from bottom to the #2 trumpet in the band. During a concert, he was the first trumpet (the tall one) and featured in the piece “Buglers’ Holiday.” It was not an easy song and he worked hard at it and performed it well. But he did receive a nickname during that time when someone in the trumpet section missed a note and when Mr. Hedgecoth initiated his investigation, someone contributed, “it’s probably that damn Rick Seagren.” so “that damn Rick Seagren” stuck for a long time.
High School was the typical early 80’s affair: Cars, bad music, West Town Mall, Marching band, pizza at the Pizza Hut on the hill and the like. It’s a wonder we made it thru high school. One summer Rick borrowed a motorcycle from someone and proceeded to lay it down on some gravel and burned his leg very badly. He had to wear long pants all summer to hide the injury (and reason for it) from his mom.
Phi Gamma Delta was the typical Regan years / Southern College with a good football team experience. I pledged the year after Rick and really appreciate the lessons learned in that house. Some good guys in that house and Rick and I were roommates for a while. The fondest memory from those years was when Rick played Santa Clause one year. Naturally, Santa has all the little sisters sit on his lap and he gives them a bottle of some liquor or wine. Santa had a great night that year.
I live in Boston now but if one of Rick’s sisters would please keep me advised of the celebration of life arrangements, I would appreciate it.
