I represented Espia on a matter in Chicago and often spoke with him on the phone. The phone calls were often long, and I always admired his spirit and determination. I was able to lessen his financial burdens after 2016, and he often called to express his continuing thanks. Even though he had very little, he insisted on sending me a $50 check and forced me to take myself out to a nice lunch with it. We had a couple calls in 2020, during the pandemic, but they stopped, and I sometimes wondered why, but didn't google his name til yesterday. I was very saddened to see that he had passed away. He sometimes said I was an "angel," and I like to think now that he is a guardian angel, watching over us.
