Obituary of Denis Burgoon

Denis Burgoon, 87, passed away at his home in Jacksonville, Florida March 18, 2021. He was a long-standing member of All Souls Anglican Church, supported the Anglican Renewal, worshipped Jesus the Christ with all his Being, and, without a doubt, went home to meet his Savior. Denis (Denis with one N) was born in Oxford Ohio in 1933 to Helen Viola Littrell and James P. Burgoon and grew up in Brecksville Ohio with his parents, his brother James (Jimmy) and a cherished Irish Setter named Rory. Upon graduation from Brecksville High School, he attended Miami University in Oxford Ohio, where he obtained a B.S. in Business Administration. He attended one year of Law School at Cleveland Marshall before running out of money for tuition and enlisting in the U.S. Army, where he served for two years as Chaplain. Before finishing Law School, Bill Libby, one of his classmates, introduced him to Barbara Van Sittert, who became his wife in 1961. He graduated from law school and joined the Ohio Bar in 1962. He was employed by Prudential Insurance Company and was transferred to their home office in Jacksonville in 1969. His beloved Barbara tragically passed away the next year from Lupus and her death began his journey as a single parent to young daughter, Beth. He took a cooking class in order to expand his menu of boxed tacos and tuna fish casseroles and, thus, embarked on a love affair with cooking that he pursued the rest of his life. He was an avid sailor and well-known athlete, especially as a runner and cyclist. For the last 16 years of his life, he took a week-long annual canoe trip into the Everglades with his best friend Peter Hoyles, ,and a few others who were brave enough to join them. This was an adventure that he anticipated and planned for with great joy all year long. Denis leaves behind his daughter, Beth Burgoon, of Franklin, Georgia, and a host of beloved friends and Church family to cherish his memory and the memories made with him. There will be a memorial service later this year. The arrangements will be made known through All Souls Anglican Church.
