Obituary of James Wallace Lewis
Please share a memory of James to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
James Wallace Lewis went to be with the Lord on August 11, 2021. Wallace, as he was called, was born and raised in Fernandina Beach, Florida. He graduated in 1974 from Fernandina Beach High School, where he played on the baseball team for several years. From there he went to work at Sears, Roebuck, and Company in Jacksonville, Florida for 18 years. He has worked at Stone Container in Yulee, FL, and then for RockTenn in Fernandina Beach, FL from which he retired a few years ago.
Because of Wallace’s love of hanging at the beach a lot when he was young, and being that he did a lot of surf fishing and flounder gigging there, he was lovingly known as the proverbial beach bum. He raised bulldogs for several years, teaching others that this breed was just as gentle as any other breed to have as pets. Wallace was an avid golf player, and was always ready to go play those 18 holes with his buddies, rain or shine. He also loved to watch sports/games, whether it was basketball, baseball, football, or even bowling on television. His favorite all-time team was the Florida Gators football team. The Florida Gators/Georgia Bulldogs game was the highlight of every football season for him. Go Gators!!
He was preceded in death by his father, James Wilbur Lewis, and all of his grandparents. He is survived by his mother, Marilyn Batten Lewis, of Palatka, FL (formerly of Fernandina Beach, FL); his son James Matthew Lewis, his daughter Megan Lewis Slaga, his grandson Kyle Jacob Lewis, long-time friend and mother of his children Earlene Scaff, all of Yulee, FL; his sisters Brenda (Stanley) King, Sheila (Ed) Wilds, Sandra (Tim) Harness, and brother Alan (Tina) Lewis, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
At this time, due to covid among family members and close friends, the memorial will be scheduled at a later time.
